More than one-third of BCCI posts are held by sons or relatives of former officials-politicians.

Mahaaryaman Scindia, son of Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, was appointed as the vice-president of the Gwalior Division Cricket Association (GDCA) earlier this month. At a time when dynasticism is not at all a political honor tag, more than a third of the 38 full members of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are former officials or politicians at the top level, despite the recommendation of the Supreme Court-appointed RM Lodha Committee. If sons or relatives are sitting, then it is natural for people to be shocked. This number is the highest in the history of BCCI.

While drafting the new BCCI constitution in 2016, it was outlined, 'In some states all members are from certain families or from the same family. Due to this, the control of cricket remains in the hands of certain individuals. However, this set the stage for some fathers to hand over the throne to their sons.

A senior BCCI functionary, on the condition of anonymity, said, “There have never been so many associations, which are governed by families.” On paper, the path to these positions is through elections in each unit. But it is only on paper. In practice, power is passed on to the next generation, as experienced administrators have formed their own strong groups. For years, they decided all major appointments in their units, so that they could influence voters in districts, clubs, or individual members.

A senior BCCI functionary explains, “Most of the units were run like private clubs, making it difficult for any outsider to enter. When sons and relatives of powerful politicians entered the fray, sometimes old people had to make way. For example, Vaibhav Gehlot, son of Congress CM Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan, is in charge of cricket in the state.

Dynasticism and political power run parallel in cricket management in Madhya Pradesh. According to Prashant Mehta, president of Gwalior division, Jyotiraditya's approval was for the appointment of Mahaaryaman. Prashant Mehta told 'The Indian Express', 'The House elects the Speaker and the Speaker is authorized to appoint the Managing Committee. Jyotiraditya Scindia was elected president (Gwalior), but he refused and then he gave me (the post). Then he made Mahaaryaman the vice-president and formed the management committee. Jyotiraditya is the patron of Gwalior division and president of Chambal division.

Jay Shah was the Joint Secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association before becoming the BCCI Secretary. His father Amit Shah was the GCA President. Former Ranji captain Jaydev Shah is the President of Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA). His father Niranjan Shah was the SCA secretary for four decades and held the same position in the BCCI. When contacted, Niranjan Shah defended the transfer of the power baton to the family.

Niranjan Shah said, 'Who can stop someone from contesting elections? If a person is an able administrator and has a love for the game, does it matter that the person is related to a former official? I have been retired due to Lodha committee rules. But the institution built over the years should not fall into the wrong hands. My son is a first-class cricketer, he has his own identity and wants to promote cricket.
