Earlier, on his birthday on 24 April, Sachin Tendulkar had made the record for scoring the most runs in ODIs. Tendulkar scored 134 runs in 131 balls in the final of the Coca-Cola Cup against Australia on 24 April 1998. Before Latham, another New Zealand player, Ross Taylor, played a big innings on his birthday. In 2011, he played an innings of 131 runs in ODIs.
According to news agency ANI, Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya scored 130 runs in an ODI match on his birthday in 2008. At the same time, Indian batsman Vinod Kambli scored 100 runs on his birthday in 1993.
Latham hit ten fours and five sixes in his unbeaten 123-ball knock against the Netherlands on Saturday. He shared a 90-run partnership with Bracewell for the seventh wicket. Batting first, New Zealand scored 264 runs. Whereas, the Netherlands team got out for just 146 runs.
