Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship program Khelo India, designed to promote sports in the country, the Khelo India University Games are going to start in Bengaluru on Sunday. The Games will be inaugurated by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said on Saturday that about 39 hundred male and female players from 189 universities across the country would shine their talents in these games. Big players who have participated in the Olympics for the country are also participating in these games, which will inspire young and budding players.

Olympians like shooter Manu Bhaker, Divyansh Singh Panwar, Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar, sprinter Dutee Chand, swimmer Shrihari Natraj are going to participate in the Khelo India University Games. A total of 275 gold medals will be at stake in the Games. The closing ceremony is going to be held on May 3, which will be attended by Home Minister Amit Shah. In the 20 sports to be held here, indigenous sports like Malkhamb and Yogasan will also be organized.

The first eight ranked players in the All India Inter University will participate in these games. These games are being organized as green games. The first Khelo India University Games were held in Bhubaneswar in 2020. During that time three thousand one hundred 82 players had participated. Punjab finished first by winning 46 medals including 17 gold medals.

Sports Minister Anurag said that the experiment of youth and university games started by the PM with the aim of promoting sports has been very successful. It has been seen around the world that the University Games have led to the winning of Olympic medals. He said that after leaving the college, the students should not leave sports when they reach the university, but adopt them and work to win medals for the country.
